Masonry Contractor Tips

Why Hire a Masonry Contractor

Masonry is building structures that are built using single units that are laid and affixed using mortar. Stone, brick, and concrete blocks are the most common units used by a professional masonry contractor. Masonry is a popular technique in every country, mostly due to its advantages. That being said, as with any construction method, there are limitations. This post, however, will only summarize the pros of masonry construction.

Types of Masonry Construction:

Pros: This type of masonry doesn’t need skilled labor, as the shape and size of the units are uniform. Bricks are lightweight, which reduces dead loads, easier to handle and transport, and cheaper than concrete blocks or stones. Brick walls are also thinner, and the units can be affixed using different types of mortar, depending on the structural requirements. Openings for the likes of doors and windows are made easily using bricks, and costs are reduced because the mortar joints are thinner.

Stone Masonry

Pros: This is the most durable, not to mention weather-resistant, thanks to the natural durability of it. Stone is recommended for buildings that receive high foot traffic, simply because it will not dent or bend. One of the biggest advantages is its aesthetic look, as it comes in various sizes, colors, and textures, making the design possibilities limitless. And, stone masonry does not need much maintenance or repairs.

Concrete Block Masonry

Pros: These are resistant against the likes of weather, pest infestation, mold, and fire. Transporting concrete blocks, however, can be expensive, however, this material can be found locally. They are available in different sizes, finishes and colors, and can even be manufactured to meet any project requirements, and some are made using recycled materials. In addition to all this, concrete blocks possess good insulating properties against moisture, heat, and sound.
